Should I be Using Motor Oil Additives?

Engine care and maintenance is important to keep your vehicle running at peak performance.  One of most important things under the hood is the oil that flows through the veins of your car. Keeping it clean and running smoothly is critical for your vehicle’s longevity. To help prevent costly engine repairs, it’s important that you get your vehicle an oil change at the intervals recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

One question you may have is; “Should I be using a motor oil additive?” You may have seen these on the market, and they can often be quite expensive. Here’s some info to help you make a determination.

What Is the Job of Motor Oil Additives?

Generally motor oil additives tout that they can prolong the life of your automobile, help to avoid engine repair and help to assist in stretching oil further. Realistically, having fresh, quality motor oil in your car at all times is the most effective way to ensure your vehicle’s best performance and to avoid unneeded engine repair.

If you have any questions, calling your local and trusted mechanic can often shed light on the specific items regarding engine services. Like, how often you should change the oil and what type of oil is recommended for your car, truck or SUV.

If you are seeing your vehicle’s Check Engine Light or and Oil Light is lit, it’s important that you first check the oil level before driving your vehicle again. If you see that your oil levels are down, it’s a good idea to add some oil before driving. It is recommended that you be proactive to avoid causing any additional damage to your vehicle’s engine by going to a professional car service center for a correct diagnosis of the issue you are having.

Most automobile makers do not actually recommend motor or fuel oil additives. It’s likely that you don’t need to use a motor oil additive at all, especially if you have a late model vehicle that you keep up-to-date with regular maintenance services.

To avoid future engine problems, keep in mind that there are a few exceptions to the rule regarding Motor Oil Additives:

  • An older vehicle might require additives to prevent additional wear on valve lifters & the camshaft.
  • A racing engine or hot rod that requires ZDDP additives for top performance.
  • A used car engine with an unknown oil change history or an engine that has not had maintenance performed at routine intervals.

Making sure your vehicle’s oil levels are well maintained will help you to avoid costly issues, like an extensive overhaul or engine repair.
