Should You Wash your Vehicle in Winter?

Should You Wash your Vehicle in Winter?

The Kansas City winter weather is already upon us this year. With several major snowstorms recently, the salt is already an issue on the roads and will likely be there for a while. Winter weather affects a lot of things, including making your car extremely dirty.

Winterizing your vehicle helps to keep it in good condition. But dirt and grime can take a toll on it too, so washing it regularly should be part of your game plan.

Getting Winter Car Washes:

If temperatures are close to freezing, we understand why you may shy away from the car wash. The idea of washing your car when the temps could very well drop below freezing is not appealing. Door locks and trunks sometimes freeze shut or get damaged.

Although regular car washes pose a few risks, it is important to keep your car clean throughout the winter. However, to avoid some of those risk make sure you don’t wash your car right before sunset and if your car can be parked in the sun right after you finish washing it, the sun will dry it off quicker avoiding some of those possible freezing issues.

Winter months make for dirty roads. Your car’s surface and undercarriage can become gritty from road salt, ice and debris. When this grime covers your car, it becomes more prone to damage, such as pitting and rust.

A car wash once or twice per month is ideal for your car in winter, depending of course on how much snow and precipitation you’ve received.

Best Winter Car Washing Tips

  • Have extra windshield wiper fluid with you. You’ll need this a lot throughout winter in the road.
  • Get a heavy duty scraper / brush combo (or two). Keep one in the car and one at home. These make it easy to scrape your windshield off and brush off the snow from your car’s entire surface.
  • Don’t forget to keep your car’s interior clean. You’ve probably tracked in snow, salt and leaves as fall changed to winter. Vacuum the floors and seats regularly. Weatherproof floor mats can protect your carpet from the elements.
